First UK mobile grocery scheme

The UK's first nationwide mobile-based shopping loyalty scheme is to launch this July, with up to 17,000 retailers planning to roll it out after a trial in a Sainsbury's store in Hull.

The 'Shop Scan Save' scheme will be rolled out by electronic payments company PayPoint, which has a network of payment terminals and Epos systems in shops such as Co-op, Spar, Costcutter, Londis and independent grocers.

The mobile scheme will enable retailers to replicate coupon schemes used by the major supermarkets by allowing consumers to get money saving deals by text message. Brands funding the scheme include Nestle, Mars, Unilever and Red Bull.

The scheme was created by mobile agency The Light Agency, which analyses shopper habits. The company said there is a 'multi-tiered roll out plan', with over 10,000 consumers already signed up to the scheme, and 'millions' expected to sign up.

Shoppers sign up to the shopping scheme by texting a standard rate SMS shortcode. A unique barcode is sent to their mobile phone , and personalised text messages give them discounts on popular items. Customers present their barcode ID, which is scanned at the till, to get their money off.

Retailers are currently being sent information on how to opt into the Shop Scan Save scheme.

A trial at a Sainsbury's shop in Jackson's in Hull delivered an average 20% coupon redemption rate.

Marc Lewis, founder and chairman of The Light Agency, said: 'Linking with PayPoint is a landmark partnership for us; we've already seen great success in local trials, so now by having our technology installed nationwide in up to over 16,000 PayPoint stores we've a huge potential to change the way the UK shops.'

New Japanese Mobile Phones Detect Motion

Some of the latest mobile phones in Japan come with motion sensors that let users detect motion or play action games like those on the Nintendo Wii console.

The D904i from NTT DoCoMo, Japan's top mobile carrier, contains a tiny motion sensor that detects shaking and tilting, company spokesman Nobuyuki Hatanaka said.

Instead of punching a keypad, users can move the handset like a tennis racket or fishing pole in easy-to-play games, similar to those on Nintendo Co.'s popular Wii.

In the "Tokyo Highway Battle" racing game, users twist the handset like a steering wheel to control driving. In the phone can be tilted to control the board's speed and direction.

Meanwhile, two new mobile phones from Sharp Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial use their built-in cameras to detect motion. Users can control a hip-hop dancer by wagging a finger in front of the camera, for example, or throw punches in the air for a boxing match.

DoCoMo warns users not to go overboard with the handsets, however.

"If you swing or swerve too hard, it'll be hard to keep your eyes on the screen, and you might bother those around you," Hatanaka said. "We're talking about somewhat subtler motions."

Downloading games to play on the go is popular in Japan, where most mobile phone users are signed up for third-generation networks that offer fast data communication. Users download games onto their handsets to play for a set monthly fee.

The new phones are expected to hit Japanese stores in May. There are no current plans for overseas sales.

LG Prada Phone Review

LG has teamed up with Italian fashion house Prada to construct the KE850, with Prada taking the design lead and LG taking care of technology.
You could argue that LG needs little help in the design department, after the recent success of the Chocolate and Shine phones , which populate its Black Label Series of ‘iconic design handsets’. However, while the Prada may not be part of the Black Label Series, it could well become the most iconic LG phone.
In true Prada style, black is the recurring theme of the LG KE850, with its black designer presentation box, black phone holder, shiny black phone casing and striking black and white menu display (you can choose other background menu colours, but black is by far the coolest). There’s even a black polishing cloth for removing smudgy fingerprints.
You get so used to seeing everything in black and white, it is only when you click on the phone’s internet browser or on one of the downloaded or built-in games that you snap out of this surreal monochrome world.
Slim and functional
The phone itself is similar in length and width to the Samsung D900 and, at just 12mm thick and weighing 85g, is the latest in a long line of attractive slim line handsets from the top two Korean manufacturers.
There is no keypad for number dialing or text entry. Instead, LG has opted for a touch-screen, which covers three quarters of the phone’s area, and three hard keys: call accept, call reject and return to the previous menu option.
On the right-hand side, there is a dedicated MP3/camera button and a menu unlock key, and on the left, you will find the volume keys, a profile-setting key and the recharging socket.
Touch-screen
The major selling point of the Prada phone is its fingertip-operated touch-screen, and this feature is likely to entertain and niggled users in equal measures.
Dialing numbers and choosing saved contacts is reassuringly straightforward, and sending text messages is fine, if a little fiddly; the touch-screen is less responsive than a phone keypad.
There are one or two other usability issues. The screen has a habit of locking quite regularly. As it is a touch-screen phone, it makes sense to have an automatic screen lock, otherwise you could be making calls and accessing the internet or MP3 player while the phone is still in your pocket. However, relentlessly pressing the side-mounted unlock key after a few seconds of inactivity can become of a bit of a grind.
You will also need to find your own method of touch-screen scrolling. You might find it easier using your thumb, or you may opt for the fingertip option. The thumb is the most comfortable method, but you will need practice to select just the options you want.
There are a few problems with the touch-screen system which emerged when browsing the web on the Orange World portal. When attempting to choose Sport, we found it easy to accidentally select the option directly below, which is ‘send us your picture’. This proved a tad frustrating.
If you’re having trouble navigating the internet browsing menu with your fingertip, we’d recommend using the touch-screen scroller arrows which appear at the bottom of the screen or the up/down keys on the left-hand side of the phone.
The two-mega pixel camera relies on a combination of touch-screen and hard key functionality to take photos and record clips. Camera/camcorder settings like auto-focus, zoom auto timer and multiple images are all controlled with the touch-screen menu, while photos are taken using the dedicated camera key.
Accessing content
Although it can’t offer 3G speeds, the EDGE-enabled Prada is still a great phone for accessing the internet. Pages download fairly quickly and look great on the large display. For some reason, Orange’s web portal was branded as Orange Worl, missing that all-important‘d’. However, the rest of the site displayed very well and you will really appreciate the display’s color quality.
Also impressive is the quality of the phone’s display when you watch a video clip. A short clip of a train hurtling through a train station, shot by one of the LG team, was stored on the phone and the quality was excellent. You can render the clip to view it vertically or horizontally.
We could go into more detail about the Prada’s gaming prowess and its strengths as a music player. However, what really sets this phone apart is its design and finger-operated user interface.
Sure, the phone will require a regular polish. You may even have to invest in a new black cloth from time to time. And the touch-screen operation is not totally infallible; a regular mobile keypad is much more responsive for entering texts and phone numbers.

However, this phone has the wow factor of the lg Chocolate and should appeal to those who like their fashion accessories to carry a label with kudos.
And while the touch-screen technology may cause you to occasionally choose the wrong menu option, it is essentially a fun and savvy way to navigate your phone.

Sony Ericsson W950 mobile phone Review

Blurring the boundaries between mobile phones and MP3 players even further, Sony Ericsson's W950 is a phone that carries a hidden secret; a 4Gb flash drive for storing music. But it is this good enough to replace two devices with one? We take a closer look.

Taking elements from the company's smartphone M600 model, the W950 is a flat fairly large phone.

At the core of the design is a large touchscreen display although Sony Ericsson has still kept a full number pad directly below this. The actual keys are hidden under the casing and we found this made is difficult to determine where one started and the other finished. While on the whole this wasn't really an issue it at times end up with the wrong button being pressed. Very frustrating.

Also irritating as a right handed person is the Sony Ericsson decision to move the back key found on all its models to the side of the device next to the toggle wheel. We say irritating because is located on the left hand side of the device rather than the right BlackBerry Users will be familiar with. It's the same with the M600i and it would be interesting to see if the lead designer on both was a lefty or righty. We suspect he is a righty.

Get into the interface and the phones menu system is virtually the same as every other Sony Ericsson handset with a couple of tweaks to accommodate that touchscreen. The home page opts for a PDA esque approach giving you quick checks on SMS messages, emails and phone calls, while the menu button takes you through to other options such as the music player.

The music offering is powered by Sony Ericsson's Walkman player and accessing tracks on the drive was just like having a large memory stick in your card slot. Accessing tunes, thanks to the flash memory rather than hard drive is very quick and as a music player the overall performance and easy of use it great.

Sony's New Walkmen

Sony Ericsson have launched two new Walkman mobile handsets the W580 slider, and the Z750 clamshell, the latter boasting tri-band HSDPA and push email.

The new W580 is a slim slider music phone that delivers the full Walkman phone experience along with gaming, imaging and fitness applications.

At just 14mm thin, the W580 is offered in two colors – Style White or Urban Grey. Inside are hot orange accents. Stunning light effects along the side change as you navigate the Walkman music player.

“When it comes to music handsets, there is no question that Sony Ericsson is on the leading edge,” says Najmi Jarwala, president, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Inc. “The W580, the latest in our extensive line of Walkman phones, is exceptionally cool looking. But most importantly it was designed first and foremost for the needs of North American consumers who want to listen to their favorite music on the go with the one device they always carry with them – their mobile phone.”

The W850 also features helpful sports applications. While listening to your favorite music, you can also track your steps, your calories and monitor your running speed/distance/time.

The W580 Walkman® phone is a Quad Band EDGE device (850/900/1800/1900) and will be available in selected markets from Q3 2007.

The Z750 is available in Phantom Grey or Rose Pink and has mirror-like qualities, hiding an external display that lights up to show an incoming call or text message. This phone packs the functionality to keep you up-to-speed, instantly and effortlessly, with updates from any number of sources – including the web, true push email and live tickertape RSS feeds that scroll across the phone desktop.

“Sony Ericsson wanted to make sure our first HSDPA handset was the perfect combination of style and function. As all know, HSDPA is a big leap forward in the speed of mobile functionality, but as always, Sony Ericsson does not deliver technology for its own sake,” says Miles Flint, global president of Sony Ericsson. “We believe the Z750 is such a compelling offer because not only will it be one of the best looking clamshells on the market, but it also provides the tools or applications which really let you get the most from these broadband speeds.”

For those consumers who might not be ready for a fully featured smart phone, the Z750 is the first Sony Ericsson handset to offer push email. On the Z750 consumers can easily send and receive email from wherever they need to work. The Z750 is Exchange ActiveSync enabled and supports wireless synchronization and Direct Push of email, calendar and contacts. Moreover, it also includes support for Java™ push mail solutions provided by third parties and leading email standards, such as POP/IMAP. With the extension of business email beyond just smart phones, Sony Ericsson offers businesses the scope to provide push email to a broader number of mobile professionals.

The Z750 is a tri-band HSDPA (850/1900/2100), Quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900) phone and will be available first in North America before wider distribution to other global markets later in the year.

New Nokia E-series phones galore

Nokia's E90 Communicator is the latest phone in the company's E-series range that has the reputation of being an all-in-one business device.

The new model supports HSDPA for speedy wireless Internet and comes integrated with a GPS receiver so businessmen can easily find that meeting venue hidden away in the most obscure part of town.

If those features are not enough to get by, Nokia's new mobileware, Intellisync Mobile Suite 8.0, can be of more use. The suite provides mobile e-mail, mobile file and data synchronisation, security, as well as device management capabilities to the E90, Nokia said.

Other new phones in the E-series range to look forward to are the E61i and the E65 slider phone.

Both phones come with 3G support and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) and are expected to be available in the market in the second quarter of this year.

Pricing for the new E-series phones have not been confirmed at press time.
